As far as horror comedies go, this is a legendary film. It doesn't rely on pop culture references: it's just straight up pure comedy that pokes fun at the tropes of the genre. It's a goddammed masterpiece.
What helps make this movie so endearing is that we truly love and empathize with the lead characters. Dale's line that he knew if a guy like him were to ever talk to a girl like Allison someone would end up dead is just so sweet and genuine. You feel for these characters.
Anytime these things/lines happen I howl with laughter:
- When Tucker & Dale first pass the teens on the highway
- When Allison takes the item off the shelf inside the gas station and Dale is staring at her
- Anytime Tucker/Dale scream "We got your friend!"
- Anytime a teen ends up killing themselves/another
- When Chad says they need to burn the place and immediately just starts dousing the place in gas
- Anytime Chad speaks
- Basically the whole movie
I hosted a movie night once with like 12 high school/college buddies like RIGHT when this was released on Netflix in 2011 and played it on a whim. It was the most hilarious most pleasant cinematic surprise of our lives. We were howling with laughter. Literally on our sides laughing so hard.
Feels so good to say, years later, I'm still howling with laughter.
I fucking love this movie.
NOTE: There have been talks of a sequel and I am trying to imagine what it would be like? How should they do it? I hope we get to find out.
