All We Imagine as Light

All We Imagine as Light

It’s always so gratifying when a film leaves you feeling renewed, revitalized, and longing for simplicity amid the bustle of everyday life. Everything in this film, every little frame, was so endearing to heart, and the honesty in every character's performance just made this film one of those experiences that you get to feel when you taste something new, and it is just out of this world. For me, it also felt like this film was not just about/for the people living in Mumbai but also those who aspire to live there or in any city that is far away from their home. It is a poetic, visually stunning film that captures the beauty and complexity of life, through the lens of women navigating societal constraints. Womens’ stories by women is always my favourite genre. The cinematography also beautifully showcases Mumbai, from the chaotic, stunning cityscapes and capturing the loneliness, love and rain, with no romanticisation of the city. The narrative intertwines three women’s stories, reflecting both external pressures and the inner lives of the characters, portrayed brilliantly by Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha and Chhaya Kadam. Through these characters, Payal Kapadia highlights issues such as systemic inequality, conservative societal norms, and the resilience of women confronting them. She also beautifully throws in the beauty of sisterhood in female friendships which was a delight to watch. I love how the film unabashedly critiques deeply rooted traditional expectations, such as family obligations and rigid marital structures. Prabha’s subtle moments of embracing the rebel in her and Anu’s secret relationship showcase the weight of societal judgment, reminding us of the double standards Indian women face in asserting their individuality. All We Imagine As Light was nothing short of beautiful and emotionally resonant, a must-watch. It was truly visual poetry like no other with a perfect ending. Thank you Payal Kapadia, for this gem. I’m so glad I watched this in cinemas with a packed audience and one of my closest friends
