“We are mortal men; we serve an ideal. We cannot always be ideal.”
I dont always start with a quote but I found the above very moving in a film that has a lot of very moving moments to me. I'm not a very religious person but I find religion in a ideal sense does lead to better people. At least that's what I would hope but sadly is not the case. I think that's what this film is really about. The church is what's next is mentioned at what point and while some may take that as Christianity is up next I think it means the church to exist has to progress just as all of civilization does at a rapid pace. Sadly I think this is lost on a lot of religious people where tradition is viewed as the norm. Not realizing tradition is very secular in nature. Tradition binds people close to you, people you relate to. I would argue a point to religion is to better all of humanity. To adhere to the different belief systems of each person with full respect is a key element to that. To focus on only those you relate with from history or "tradition" seems to conflict with this idea. Conclave makes the argument that yes the church has lost its way by becoming alienated. I think it's very daring as a story.
As a film it's not too shabby either! Ralph is going for that Oscar and honestly Tucci might be as well for supporting. Dune also now has some completion for cinematography this film is absolutely gorgeous. Such great shits and I love the coloring in this. It's a bit slow in the first like 30 mins but once the Conclave starts it is very engaging and full of dramatic moments. Score is a bit much but not bad. Just have to reiterate the performances in this film are some of the best I've seen so far this year.
Ok now the last bit and slight spoilers so you have been warned I'll skip a few lines though just in case. I'm not tagging it though as everything above is good to read
I think the ending is very powerful. Especially knowing the bigotry and assumptions we just saw made a few months ago at the summer Olympics. A coincidence but there is a parallel there and that final speech is absolutely beautiful. I do wish they had it a bit more hinted at as there is really only one hint to it but very small complaint. It's a beautiful showing of the films themes on what's next for the church and how it is truly for everyone that wants to participate.
I may not be religious currently as I said above, but I do believe that everyone should have a ideal plan, just know we ourselves are not ideal. That is what makes everyone more than just mortal, it makes us human.
