The Lighthouse is nothing if not a singular vision! Director Robert Eggers employs a crisp black and white photography and a whole host of sound effects to create a swirling descent into madness. The plot very simply focuses on two lighthouse keepers who begin to question their sanity while keeping the lighthouse. The film benefits from two brilliant lead performances. Robert Pattinson is good as the younger of the pair; but Willem Dafoe absolutely steals the show as the crazy old sea dog captain. It's a completely overblown performance. The delivery of his garrulous monologues is a major highlight! The film takes in aspects of folklore and mythology, especially the myth of prometheus which is represented by the titular lighthouse. The atmosphere is immense and the film has a real sense of grandeur despite the very small scale of the story. It's totally understandable why the director chose the 1.19:1 aspect ratio. The Lighthouse is an interesting ride and a very bold film. I haven't seen anything quite like it recently.
