While greeted with a scarcely lit glimpse into an account of psychosis that could be lost in an attic in New England, what's very unexpected is pestles of flatulence, flagellation, and repressed sexuality grinding two poor souls against an eternal bowl of heaving tides. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson clash wills with increasing mania and lust for an enchanting obelisk above the muck of their existence. Gallons of swill pours as Dafoe waxes sophistry and Pattinson goes out strange into seagull persecution and merfolk genitalia.
A wonderful ambiguity creeps in, confusing the perceived depths of their insanity and who's really pulling the strings. Much research went into period accuracy, dialect,and cinematography but The Lighthouse never gets too murky as an intense character study coated in Lovecraftian slime. Director/co-writer Robert Eggers needs to keep contact with Dafoe and continue forcing viewers to turn the subtitles on. Watched via Lionsgate's DVD.
