This belated entry in the Scream franchise picks up the story ten years after the events of Scream 3. The comedy element is largelly dropped, the movie references are retained and the horror and meta elements are ramped right up. The opening sequence nicely sets the tone - going for the shock factor of the original films but with the whole self referential "movie within a movie" theme tied in. The film is structured in the common modern day reboot style; returning characters to continue the original story with a new young cast leading the way. It's a murder mystery with plenty of murder scenes and these are more frequent and bloodier than what was seen previously. It's good to see the ghostface killer actually posing a proper threat this time, though the numerous death scenes do come at the expense of the mystery element, whjch could have been better composed. There are at least plenty of red herrings and the whole concept of filming everything and putting it on the internet feels like a natural way for the meta elements of the original to progress given modern day social media etc. The conclusion stretches the bounds of believability but that's fine really. It wouldn't be a proper Scream film if it didn't. Scream 4 is hardly the best of the series, but it's still a worthwhile entry. Shame that this would prove to be Wes Craven's last film, but it's not a bad one to go out on.
