Luis Buñuel’s erotic drama is textured, complicated, and spellbinding. It speaks to repressed female sexual desire and trauma, while simultaneously reflecting on how it plays with male sexuality and control. Catherine Denice gives the character a lot of depth and Jean Sorel is dreamy. Drop-dead gorgeous costume design. The ending feels a tad rushed, losing some of the impactful internal conflict we see unfolding through all that came before it. Even so, Belle De Jour is a stunner.
