Self aware (and meta) to the point of becoming a glib parody (that's how I took it anyway). This was Scream lovingly taking the piss out of the Scream formula, and sending the series out with a very bloody, celebratory bang. The fourth film in and yet, an argument could be made for it being the second best one.
