As much as I wanted to love this, personally I’m just not a fan of it. There were some parts I liked but also much where I don’t. Maxine Minx is back with a blast on a whole new journey through a bloody Hollywood. We get to see her meet several eccentric yet fascinating people throughout the movie who are significantly underdeveloped to me as they all had very minimal presence and arcs that weren’t fully fleshed out so I couldn’t really connect with these characters. MaXXXine is a wild ride filled with tons of vicious thrills and brutal kills but is brought down by its messy, convoluted and chaotic story. The overall tone was also pretty wacky and felt all over the place and at times directionless. I really loved what Ti West had built with the world of X and Pearl so this was really unfortunate. Both of those were great self-contained films with a clear direction of what they wanted to be, X, a fun and thrilling slasher and Pearl, an exceptional character study of a misunderstood villain. With this new installment, the overall mystery just didn’t quite resonate with me and wasn’t what I envisioned the film to be like. Despite this underwhelming and sadly disappointing outcome, there’s no denying that both Maxine Minx and Mia Goth are in fact movie stars and scream queens.
