Chen does not waste time on unnecessary dialogue or dramatic narrative. Rather, he uses expansive visuals and rich music to breath life into his film and paint a picture of feudalism. Chen's film critiques Maoism's part in abandoning these feudal societies, and he reveals how ideology can drag a people by false hope. I'm not personally experienced in Northern Chinese folk culture/music, but god is it compelling. The marriage of barren landscape shots and raw, howling-like singing strips back the film and it's culture to the most primal elements.
