Beautiful reminder of all the ways Lynch raised me artistically and the reasons I ever felt compelled to create to begin with. I still see those early influences weaved into the fabric of my life and revisiting his works today, I feel just as artistically connected to him as ever. Love so many of the ideas and emotions and bodily sensations this one left me to sit with. Such a refreshing, layered exploration of ableism, particularly around fetishization, exploitation, representation, workplace ethics, and (the icing on the cake of destruction) internalized ableism. I winced, I gagged, I screamed, I squirmed, I laughed. Really overwhelming stuff!

Maybe I'm just that whipped for Wes, but this was fan servicey in ways I didn't mind. Like, give me those goopy sticky stairs and Longarms again and again, I will eat it up every time.

This is soooo Soderbergh’s Rohmer! To me, this debut is far and away Soderbergh’s strongest and most moving work. A forever favorite. I watched with his commentary track, which had so many [literally] juicy tidbits, like James Spader’s always-real-never-spritzed upper lip sweat and Andie MacDowell’s ability to blush on cue every time she’s asked about masturbation in therapy.
