Sutter Cane’s review published on Letterboxd:
In preparing to see the new film, 'Evil Dead Rise,' I wanted to revisit the original trilogy (for the billionth time) and the sequel series, 'Ash vs. Evil Dead' and while those all kick serious ass, I had only ever given the sort-of requel from 2013 one go which was back during its initial run in 2013. When I saw it in theaters, it left me quite cold, save for the unnecessary tacked-on stinger at the end. Admittedly cool, but what was the point?
Returning to this one again, I enjoyed it even less than the first time. All the characters are cardboard caricatures, the acting, save for Jane Levy, is horrendous, and the film comes off like a sanitized version of Evil Dead. Even the gore feels clean if that makes sense. I never found myself enthralled by what was transpiring on screen. I never cared if any of these people lived or died before dawn.
All of the charms in the original holy grail trilogy and its series are absent in this film. A sterilized version of Evil Dead is not worth mentioning in the same breath as the others. And worst of all, it is boring. Which is the worst thing a film or show in this groovy franchise can be. Here's to hoping the next film can rise to the occasion.
Grade: D+
