Hackerman’s review published on Letterboxd:
If Barbenheimer had themes of existential fears of death and purpose, then Glicked is all about CGI animals and I guess crowding around people to watch them dance or fight.
That does lead into my negatives. While the set design is immaculate, I wasn’t vibing with the effects and occasional glossy look. In the 1939 film the monkeys are in camera and played by actors, here it couldn’t be farther from a real tangible animal on-screen. There’s a sequence with saving a caged baby lion, and holy balls it looks bad. It’s 2024 and these Hollywood effects guys can’t get animals down. So really this is a bigger criticism with modern movies as a whole, and it seems like it’s here to stay. Like I’ve said over and over, I get it’s not the 70s anymore, but man, it sucks not having animals in camera anymore. The one rare example of a amazing looking digital animal is in GOTG 3, probably because the workers weren’t crunched to finish it.
Now, for positives, I really enjoyed this. Grande and Evrio have palpable chemistry and have fantastic vocals. I mentioned set design, and it deserved a second mention. SO much effort put into the look and feel, at least as far as what the characters interact with. And they make sure to utilize them to the fullest; the dance sequences are absolutely dazzling and will leave you transfixed. There might be too many songs, but a ton of care and choreography is put into every one.
Alright time to shift gears back to negative and complete the reverse-compliment sandwich. A criticism sandwich. My second biggest complaint is the length. Insert joke about Letterboxd review length here. We know film length has been a hot topic for film Twitter and all movie circles, and I have been all for 3 hour epics. I don’t even enjoy saying “you could cut this, or that” because that’s how studio executives think, you know? But this would’ve definitely been a better movie if ten minutes AT LEAST were shaved off. We don’t need to see a stupid subplot with Ariana Grande’s stupid boyfriend. She’s a damn homewrecker fr.
Like many others it seems, I wasn’t even gonna checkout Wicked until I saw the songs were bangin and the reviews were very positive. But between that, Glicked, and this seeming like one of the bigger movies of the year, I was won over to get Glicked down. And I’m glad I completed both films in IMAX.
2024 movies where characters dance on the table
Recent movies where directors got 3 hours for whatever the fuck they want
