The Royal Hotel has a lot going for it, the core cast is really strong. Julia Garner, Jessica Henwick, Hugo Weaving, and Ursula Yovich are all great actors and perform to carrying strong degrees, and the general men at the bar feel true to character, entitled scumbags with dangerous intents. Kitty Green does an admirable job showing micro aggressions in their various forms, and the violence that they imply and encourage. Unfortunately, this film is missing some beats. Hannah and Liv never really communicate, beyond simple confirmations and plans. The few scenes they do speak is minimal, they almost feel like coworkers not best friends that have known each other for more than two weeks. There’s really no interior life to speak of here. The first hour built a lot of tension, and the remaining thirty minutes sorta played out like a rough sketch missing any real significance. Get Julia Garner in good movies please, she’s incredible in Ozark.
