Robb’s review published on Letterboxd:
A 5 minute short with 2 minutes of credits at the end. Yet in that short amount of time, I forgot this was a short and was completely shattered when it cut to credits. Jonathan Glazer is a master at the form, and I beg that he can film at least a couple more movies before he or I die. Glazer fascinates me with his sound, his sequencing, and the contrast that stands out in every frame. Every moment is coordinated, not to act like I’m aping Twitter discourse but sincerely I love his style of blocking. I am reminded of the quote by Truffaut that “There’s no such thing as an anti-war film.” and how Glazer purposely refuses to portray the implied violence in all his work I have seen (Zone of Interest, Under the Skin) and now The Fall. Glazers ability to make his films dynamic, expansive, and emotional despite denying the crutch of implied violence is truly inspiring, and I believe would give Truffaut pause.
Implication of cruelty, our expectation of it, that denial, and our emotional response are great damnations of our psyche. I have seen many complain that these films deny the audience the gratification of violence, or the escape of simple conflicts, and in turn are boring or uninteresting…what does that say of us? That we cannot view an internal conflict in an external format without an overt and obligatory physical confrontation?Blood and honey.
I digress, stunning, stunning imagery and really undeniable physical storytelling. Rather than read anymore of my thoughts, go watch this. Short, effective, sticky. I love it.
