Just as a sculptor must form art out of inconsequential and indecipherable stone, so too is Cocteau’s approach to film. Plot and character are less important than theme and mood, and in these we can find the repeated obsessions of the auteur, universal fulcrums such as ego, death, creativity that drive all of mankind in one way or another. The Blood of a Poet is aptly named, for this does feel enigmatic and ethereal, like a myth about what “film” is as expression.
