The noble science of dentistry saves the day, and Godzilla dies of tooth decay. Maybe that’s not exactly how it happened, but pretty close. More of a satire of the overwhelming bureaucracy present at every facet of government, how slow responses compound carnage among wishy washy politicians. Unfortunately with such focus on those coldly pulling the strings, there is a lot of lost heart and emotion. Sometimes it sorta felt like a kid crashing a toy Godzilla into a lego towers. Visually, Godzilla’s big assault after his second emergence was really impressive, but I wasn’t that taken later on with his targeted lasers stiffly shooting side to side. His initial appearance is also hilarious.
It was a pretty good movie, but I can’t say I was blown away. I didn’t really care about the characters. Godzilla Minus One has a different approach and sensibility than Hideaki Anno’s that I was simply more invested in and affected by, that in comparison, makes Shin Godzilla feel pretty standard and dull. Not really the film’s fault, since I just saw Minus One an hour before, but it’s how I feel after watching it anyway.
