What we envision as fantasy is really nightmare. What we dream, is reality we cannot grasp. So much of the imagery calls to Twin Peaks, yet there is something more concrete here beyond theory and emotion. There is a true plot we witness, and it is truly sorrowful. Left me with a deep melancholy, and other emotions too.
I think with Twin Peaks, as I rushed through it and rewatched Fire Walk With Me earlier (its 6 am, I’ve been up a while.) Mulholland Drive has centered me in a way. I can analyze and theory all I want, and it could be enjoyable and enlightening to do so. But at least right now, tired, a little drunk, up far too long, and yet I am overwhelmingly left with the desire to watch it again. To continue thinking. To ponder, I suppose.
I think it’s past time I watch Sunset Boulevard. I also have Inland Empire on criterion, so I’ll likely watch both and return to this shortly. Lynch has a deep hold on me.
Side notes on the film, Naomi Watt’s performance floored me. I love the noir callbacks, and I especially love how reminiscent this is of Bergman. Really, I now feel confident in saying Lynch’s entire career owes Bergman a debt. Both are among my very most important filmmakers, and thus favorites. They cover such similar threads in often times different ways, it was refreshing for me to see more obvious homage to Persona visible here. Haunting score too.
