Fascinating to see Bergman fully embrace the horror genre, an artist in crisis by public and private turmoil. Sexual, artistic, and personal jealousy given way to nightmares that surely influenced directors from Lynch to Lars and many films over the years like Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream, Begotten, Suspiria, Lighthouse, and many many more. Really love to see Bergmans style take such a gothic turn, many of these envisioned people stand out in interesting ways, and individual scenes are truly shocking. Of course, Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann are perfect, the sharp contrast is perfectly unsettling, and the whole time I was intrigued. Bergmans insight into the human mind, obsessions, envies, and tormented questions, are unparalleled on the screen. Fitting I watched this in my own hour of the wolf, and feel all the more the meaning behind that phrase.
