"It's a leap of faith. That's all it is, Miles. A leap of faith."
Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse is not only one of the greatest animated films ever made, but one of the best Superhero films ever made as well. I'd put it second only to The Dark Knight which is a testament to just how great the movie is and it's most definitely the Spider-Man film that fans of the comics and the animated TV series have always deserved.
The first most obvious and apparent thing about the film is just how incredible it is visually and stylistically. The animation style is so unique and no other film looks like this one, which is the best endorsement you can make about a film made in 2018. The fact Sony are trying to patent the animation techniques on display here tells you just how unique and groundbreaking they are, the film is so colourful, vibrant and like a page of a comic book coming to life. The aesthetic of the film is pitch perfect right down to the colouring, the environments, the little details. It's both a beautiful homage to the source material and stays true to it, while being tongue in cheek and having satirical take on it as well. It manages to balance and blend the two perfectly and play with it in interesting ways.
Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse has themes that every Spider-Man film has and has the essence of what the story is truly about, the
notion that anybody can become a superhero and what it means to be a hero. Irrespective of age, sex, gender, race heroism can come in many different forms. The multi-verse gives the film the platform to both explore this idea through having several different iterations of Spiderman - from an out of shape, middle aged, broken down white Peter Parker to a young, unsure of himself, black kid in school in Miles Morales. It explores the central idea of the film, whilst also producing a lot of wit and comedy. Both from an audience perspective, it gives kids of all ages and backgrounds a Spider-Man to attach themselves to and identify with and from a story point of view, it gives Miles a sense of understanding of who he is, where he's at and who he could become as Spider-Man.
The biggest flaw with the film is one that you can overlook, but the garish soundtrack attempting to be in tune with current musical trends just comes across as vapid, empty and doesn't contribute anything to the film as a whole for me. But it's really easy to overlook one minor flaw when a film is this relentlessly paced, high octane, colourful, vibrant, fun with superb action set pieces and it makes you feel a childlike sense of wonder and glee, a movie that's just pure unadulterated fun for absolutely everyone.
