“Are you still saying your prayers?”
Probably the most effective horror film I've seen this decade. Deeply disturbing to watch; I felt completely awful by the end of it. Atmosphere was impeccable. Performances were all solid; especially Maika Monroe and Nicholas Cage. Cage’s performance definitely isn’t for everyone, but I felt his comedic touch to the character gave the film a nice balance, between the constant sense of dread and impending doom.
Andres Arochi’s cinematography was also a highlight for me – I loved the way this was shot. The way certain scenes are framed and the way he uses limited space is impressive and really gets your heart going. Very great use of lighting in many of the night scenes too. The changes in aspect ratio and the “camcorder” style footage were also a great touch. The film’s sound design in combination makes for some very unsettling, claustrophobic moments. The films’ story itself is nothing to write home about, but all the other pieces are there, which in turn elevate this simple story. My favorite aspect though, is despite how ridiculous the whole concept is on paper, the film is actually incredibly grounded.
