Utterly perfunctory, as is the way with Todd Haynes. Neither interested in being a “social issue” film nor a functional drama, Carol plods along with the listlessness of someone repeating a story they grew bored of telling long ago. what would be centerpiece details in any half-functional story (for instance, any details regarding the foundation of Carol and Therese’s allegedly rapturous love) are instead bracketed, leaving us with only tedium.
This renders the whole thing quite strange. One would think…

terribly boring. funny that eggers made such a fuss about this being ellen’s story when he chooses to foreground so many pointless male characters and dampens ellen’s rational faculties so as to make a spectacle of her magical intuition and hysteria, thus leaving the essential conflict of the original utterly perfunctory.
