Works better, I think, on the contextually literal narrative level than on the level of metaphor at which it concurrently operates. In part that’s because intersexness has been so thoroughly metaphorized and rhetoricized in discourse—particularly by both trans people and our political opponents—that its continued use in that manner is necessarily always a little frustrating. That said, high drama and intrigue within the confines of a cloistered and intensely ritualistic setting will always be a joy to watch, and I don’t mind a bit of fanciful optimism right now.

Companion 2025
The whole Ira Levin updated for the incel era thing is theoretically compelling but the metaphors are a lot more muddled and less appealing when the AI itself becomes a girlboss. Plus this is one of the worst screenplays I’ve encountered in recent memory. But y’know, I saw this to kill time between social engagements in the city and it was a better way to spend two hours than playing cinenerdle on my phone while overstaying my welcome at Talia’s workplace so it has that going for it.
