    like adaption is a meta film about writing an adaptation of a book from the narrative techniques and the own self referencial nature of the film; synecdoche, new york is an autobiography about trying to make an autobiography. kaufman employs that not only through narrative and themes but using surrealism as a technique to replicate our own lives, how quickly times pass, seeing what’s happening right in front of us as absurd…

    on this rewatch, i enjoyed it even more but i was trying to figure out what the metaphor was with these cannibals, their lifestyles and their love. i came upon the personal interpretation that it’s a mix of being an addict, being queer, severely mentally ill and basically any identity that leaves you on the fractures of society. it’s this isolation from any real normal life that creates people like sully (mark rylance), david gordon green and michael stuhlbarg’s characters…

    filling a lynch blind spot in the wake of the news. there isn’t a more fitting film i could’ve seen as lynch was never quite as old as alvin when he made this but with how he lived in the later years of his life, it can’t come as anything more than personal.

    the same way alvin strives to find his brother even with every ailment working against him, is the same way i saw lynch. he suffered from emphysema…
