The boulder falling is one of my favorite uses of foreshadowing ever. Gal tries very, very hard to stray from the life by putting hundreds of miles and multiple countries between himself and his criminal past, but the funny thing about crimes and those who perpetuate them is how far they can stretch their arms and pull you back into an underworld you believed you crawled your way out of. And let us not forget, we’re taking about an inferno comprised of men, and their view of women is, shall we say, less than Dworkinian.
In a way, masculinity is this very underworld—a hell one can’t escape—and no one has more of a macho-madman streak than Don “Ya Fucking Cunt-Ya Fucking Cunt-Ya Fucking Cunt” Logan, whose arrival is augured symbolically and a bit cheekily by the landslide, both of which nearly flatten Gal, but, in the end, as he says after the close call with the boulder, it only almost killed him.
Gal does end up having to take one last trip to the house of Hades, and to add insult to injury, is paid a measly tenner for his work, but to him, money doesn’t matter; he is just content to be out. We don’t know if anyone will come calling for Gal again, next time wanting more than his help on a job; perhaps the devil will circle back with a mind to reclaim his soul, or some friend of Don’s seeking vengeance. Who knows. But I like the happy ending so I will refrain from any definitive insinuendos.
