The Marvels trio tries its best to save a rather uninteresting premise but ultimately falls just a tad short. The three leads: Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani all have wonder chemistry here together. The film is simply at its best when the trio are just hanging out and trying to figure out how their powers are all linked. Unfortunately, there’s a really bland super-hero film wrapped around it. As fun as this trio is together it feels like the film doesn’t have a story here worth telling once they have joined together. The villain is incredibly underwritten and I couldn’t tell you their name even though the movie just ended. The film plays out in a fairly predictable manner and hits a lot of the beats you expect. Most of the humor misses and the third act of this film just leaves the experience feeling incredibly stale honestly which is a sad case. The titular characters bring a lot of charm to the film and deserved better here. Nia DaCosta also helmed the action scenes with a good bit of energy for a couple sequences and definitely deserves her props there for that. I’m giving The Marvels a 48% ❌.
