JTA The Film Passionator’s review published on Letterboxd:
Deadpool & Wolverine - Entertaining, Thrilling, and Funny!
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) is a superhero comedy movie directed by Shawn Levy, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Ryan Reynolds, Zeb Walls, Rhett Reese, and Paul Wernick. The movie features Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Matthew Macfayden, Emma Corrin, Leslie Uggams, Rob Delaney, Aaron Stanford, and Morena Baccarin.
Serving as the sequel to Deadpool 2 (2018) and the thirty fourth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) has been teleported to the MCU by the TVA, only for him to learn that their leader Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfayden) will destroy his original timeline. To stop him, Deadpool must team up with an alternate version of Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), who form an unlikely friendship.
The story was fantastic as it handles the Multiverse concept perfectly by having a well-structured story. With its great slow pacing, the story offers brilliant character development, thrilling action sequences, and a perfect balance of humorous and heart touching weight. The movie explores the strong themes of friendship, family, teamwork, and Good vs. Evil. This is shown when Deadpool and Wolverine form a strange friendship in order to save Deadpool’s friends from his timeline from an evil multiverse leader.
The performances from the cast were amazing as they have used body language and emotive language to support the movie’s comedic and thrilling atmosphere. They will keep the viewers engaged and entertained with how the actors acting in a serious yet funny fashion. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have delivered the best performances because they have the strongest energy and emotions to form their characters’ friendship.
The characters are likeable, relatable, and memorable because they have well-written goals and plenty of humorous moments to make the viewers empathise with them while they are being entertained. In my opinion, Deadpool and Wolverine have the best character development since they first had an unlikely friendship until they got to understand each other better as the story progresses.
Like the first two Deadpool films, the humour was well-executed both visually and verbally as it kept the original films’ charm by making the movie hilarious and engaging.
The action sequences were fantastic since they increase the movie’s pacing with its astonishing choreography, the use of comedy elements, and breathtaking stunts performed by the characters.
George Richmond’s cinematography skills were marvellous as he used some impressive camera shots that make the viewers excited with what the movie builds up. For instance, a medium long shot of Deadpool on the floor taken from a low angle with Wolverine’s silhouette was used to make the former feel weak compared to his partner. This makes the viewers both worried and excited about Wolverine’s presence because they want to Deadpool to survive his own movie, but thrilled with Wolverine’s return.
The costume designs were incredible since they pay tribute to the source material and fit nicely into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with their intimidating yet unique colours. Wolverine’s costume has to be the greatest aspect of the movie as it has a more faithful approach to his comic counterpart instead of using his original costume from the X-Men films.
Rob Simonsen’s soundtrack was outstanding and fun to listen to. This is because it maintains the entertaining and exciting nature of its predecessors and suiting the movie’s lighthearted mood. The use of different songs throughout the battle sequences add some hilarious depth to keep the viewers thrilled and entertained as it fits perfectly with the characters’ silly actions.
The movie’s target audience are people who enjoy watching superhero movies with comedy elements. This is because the movie has plenty of thrilling action scenes, strong language, and a great sense of humour supported by inappropriate jokes. The movie also appeals to fans of the MCU and the Deadpool series as they want to see how Marvel Studios incorporates their favourite fourth wall breaking hero while understand how the film ties in with the previous and future MCU films.
In conclusion, Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) was another hilarious instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with its faithfulness to oth the characters’ nature in the comics and the previous films. In my opinion, this is certainly worth watching! This will laugh your head off! This is one of the best movies in the MCU!
