I have never... in my life...ever...seen a movie whose entire purpose...every single scene...is designed to render you...as a human being...into nothing more than a puddle of tears. A blubbering mess. Nothing but a soggy wet blanket longing for a hug from mommy.
I honestly didn't think this movie would resonate with me even as it went on. There are no human characters. Only robots and animals. It has the potential to be hamfisted, like it's going to make some kind of preservation of the environment or protection of animals kind of message that would have completely lost me, but it instead opts for this journey of connection. The idea that found family is still family, and that yes, kindness can be a survival skill.
Lupita Nyong'o and Pedro Pascal are unrecognizable in their voice roles, and whoever did the score is the ultimate master of emotional manipulation. That flight scene... my goodness.
The animation team 👌 For this not to be a Pixar movie, you made me think I was watching top-tier Pixar, which is no small feat. The Wild Robot is what you get when you combine Wall-E with Big Hero 6, and the last scene of Toy Story 3 all at once.
Beautiful, powerful, emotionally devastating, and I want my mommy.
