Possibly the most gorgeous film I’ve ever seen. Lubezki’s camera work just radiates with impressive visuals in every frame, almost as if you were walking around a gallery admiring all the masterful paintings. Malick’s direction is so utterly idiosyncratic, it feels hard to compare it to anything else. Kubrickian films jump to mind, but I’m only pulling similarities between the deeper thematic strands in both this and 2001. Even so, this expressionism was certainly a marvel of filmmaking. Such wonder lies in the ambivalence. Why did Malick choose to portray certain moments as he did? Of course, the chronicle of time and the foundation of the universe is unequivocal brilliance; yet I felt there was such a raw brutality to many scenes of the family, and it really heightened the overall atmosphere. Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain are perfect - Pitt’s raging utilitarian views complement flawlessly with Chastain’s reserved and collected manner. The Tree of Life is indeed a vast, expansive piece, but also flourishes with its quietly devastating portrayal of a detached family in the 1950s.
