fulfilling legacies of the past. perhaps the perfect sequel to something like top gun, which is both it's strongest and weakest aspect. considering it's for a film i don't have strong feelings for aside from it's romanticist allure and homoeroticism, this film still is quite well written and visually engaging for what it is. it is beat for beat like top gun, but this time, the film actually has a clear conflict and plot that makes the story actually engaging this time. as for the visuals, my complaints of the flat action scenes are now resolved with kosinki's sensibilities for visual awe of aerial combat. they don't feel like documentarian shots of airplanes flying, but there is physical space that the pilots actually get to navigate, and use their fighter jets to fit the story. all of the training and combat scenes were actually fun to watch. also, i think most of the callbacks to the original work and aren't the most annoying, ice man's subplot is especially done right, which i won't spoil of course. again, this is a sequel to a film i'm not super hyped about and it's still like the biggest advertisement for the navy, but still an insanely fun time.
