Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer

79%🔋Hmm this one’s tricky as there’s a lot here that I didn’t like but the ass end of the film I really loved. It’s a dense film that deals with background politics and snake moves that writhe around the invention of the atomic bomb. What I got from the film is how stupid humans can be and it’s clear that as good as Oppenheimers intentions were, he has forsaken us to a state in a world where we ourselves will wipe each other out.

I thought the first half was rather mehh and quite frankly the hype regarding the realistic atomic bomb with no cgi was highly underwhelming. This is why you keep some shit close to your chest and not let audiences know what they’re in store for I was blessed to have been able to see this in 70mm film stock and it does add a richness to the film, ever frame envelops your eye and is pretty grand. Sound design is stellar as well.

My main complaint was again Nolan’s horrid writing for female characters, wtf was Florence Pugh doing here besides being naked and fucking Cillian Murphy while reciting hindu passages or something along those lines, ig she was a communist but my boo was completely wasted. Vaporized if you will, Blunt fared better and was able to bring pathos and anger to her role but it was still very underwritten.

It’s a competently made film don’t get me wrong but I can’t help that it ran a bit too long, I will say my favorite part of the film was the back half and the courtroom drama turn it takes, it was a nail biter and although a bit confused by all the ins and outs what I got is that all these men and don’t be mistaken this is a sausage fest, but none of these men had the greater good in mind. They wanted the biggest explosion possible, Merica huh? Sigh.

The strongest aspect is defining the acting by Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr, Murphy is able to convey a despair and ultimate knowing that what he’s doing will have dire ramifications for the future of the world, he envisions it through cosmic blast and missile trails, how far are we from that reality? Scary to think. & Downey Jr plays a perfect type of political scumbag that seemed to have wanted all the glory. The scene where Rami MaleK blasted him in court was so good and I really loved for all these scenes. The rest of the ensemble though is to be forgotten about, they brought nothing to the table except maybe Jason Clarke. Def don’t see this as a SAG nominee not by a long stretch.

Overall this is far from Nolan’s best film, it’s bit too talky, dense and stuck in a time that only folks of that era will truly grasp. I was not around for all the bullshit and destruction of a country but men are garbage and like to play god too damn much. The moment we split the atom is the moment our death sentence was stamped. Those are Gods particles not men’s and what consequences we receive for messing with that will be a brunt we’ll have to carry. Fuck war and wmd’s fr.

after sitting on it for 24 hrs I’m gonna revise my score to a 4/5. That last hour and a half was really great.
