1: Introduction
I’ve been needing to watch The Witch for awhile. I’m a big Eggers fan and it’s the only film of his I haven’t seen yet. While I don’t think it’s up to par with his other films I definitely enjoyed it. I love this time period in history and seeing that used in a horror film was really exciting.
2: Performances
The Witch is a very methodical, performance driven film. The performances here are good but the stand out is Anya Taylor-Joy. She absolutely killed it. I knew this film was her claim to fame but after seeing it I can see why. She’s young and fearful and that works perfectly for her character. After all her character is just a teenager who’s been thrown into this pilgrim version of the exorcist. None of the other performances really stood out to me though. That’s not to say they are bad because they are very good, it’s just that Anya stole the show.
3: Cinematography
The cinematography in The Witch is on par with Eggers other work. This should be a good sign to any Eggers fan as he is probably one of the most visually impressive directors of this century. The final 5 minutes of this film uses lighting so well and creates this perfect creepy and demented atmosphere.
4: Conclusion
Overall, I really liked this movie. It’s scary without showing anything because it feeds off your fear of the unknown and what could be watching you from the shadows. Definitely recommend this to both fans of historical films and fans of the horror genre. This is a must watch, even if it does drag a little in the middle.
