The natural light, the brilliant, claustrophobic (and) or isolationist camerawork and the attention to detail in the historical depiction - what else can be said about this masterpiece?
Compared to "The Lighthouse", the movie is certainly more accessible.
The religious symbols are manifold, beginning with the expulsion from paradise, temptation (the apple), the American wilderness (as an analogy to the biblical desert) and the trials:
"The Witch" has a high rewatch factor - it's fun to follow all the clues, to interpret all the images one way or the other.
Personally, I think the supernatural elements are a false trail: The movie works better if you go for the more obvious explanation in each case.
Then it's a story about delusion and blindness, about madness born of necessity and paranoia. Who needs the devil then?
The witch hunts of modern times are in the past, but the movie is still shockingly topical: from "alternative medicine" to propaganda and online influence, to people who know, thanks to YouTube, that man-made climate change doesn't even exist.
Fortunately, witches are no longer burned at the stake.
But superstition has only taken on a new form.
