Emilia Perez was easily one of the most anticipated releases for me this year. A crime thriller, political drama mixed with neon and musical elements. Sign me up!! And for a good chunk of this I was totally on board with everything (minus one musical number). However, there’s a shift at the beginning of the second act that really ticked me off. Our main character (a deeply evil cartel kingpin who’s murdered hundreds himself and thousands with his product) transitions and becomes Emilia. My problem with this though, is that the film tries to make us forgive them for all the perverse evil they’ve done not because they’re a good person now but, simply because they’re trans. I personally feel like this is not only extremely twisted but a bit transphobic as well.
That issue aside I did enjoy the rest of this. The musical elements are technically phenomenal and super fun to watch. I think the performances and cinematography are fantastic and Selena Gomez is electric. I just wish this would have had a different message or even forgo a message entirely because the rest of this was good if not great.
