Seeing this in theaters was a surreal experience. This is the type of film that feels like it’s existed forever. Like an essential work of art that defines the medium for all time, and it’s barely half a decade old. Robert Eggers is great at this sort of folktale cinema. Like these twisted stories you read about throughout history but struggle to visualize due to how distant they feel from modern day. Eggers doesn’t struggle with that. He’s created some of the most memorable single images in modern film and I’m so glad I get to experience his work as it releases.
