Rob on Film’s review published on Letterboxd:
I can’t tell you how thrilled I am currently. I’ve seen this film three times before, ironically the first time I didn’t care a lot for it, but this time was my favourite. Just everything about it made me expel with joy, happiness and my favourite, sadness. And I just think it’s the most beautiful film ever made. Damien Chazelle blends classical and modern Hollywood filmmaking to create a musical romance that subverts expectations and has the audience reflect on life itself. The film’s exploration of ambition, dreams and relationships is, in my opinion, flawlessly done as both Mia and Sebastian represent so many different parts of each of those aspects. Both characters, who are wonderfully written, contribute to each other’s lives at a time when they’re struggling with their lives, and through each other learn to keep pushing on and succeed in those dreams. And through the genius blending of classical and modern Hollywood, we get a version of this type of story that falls in the middle of both categories. The dazzling and powerful musical numbers present emotion and allow the characters to have their internal feelings displayed on screen. The cinematography blows me away. I could practically pick something out of every shot. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone give two of the best performances I’ve ever seen, especially Stone. But both performances are moving, compelling and unforgettable. And both performances make the characters stand out as and for “fools who dream”. The ending scene is perhaps my favourite ending scene from a film of all time. It’s truly perfect in what it says about both leads and just life, relationships and dreams themselves. This is one of those films that feels a privilege to watch, like I’m lucky to have seen it. I think it’s a masterpiece and one of the best films ever made. La La Land is just incredibly beautiful inside and out.
