I normally don't like musicals but La La Land is something special. Perfectly capturing both the romantic and artistically corrupt side of Los Angeles it is the ultimate tribute to artists everywhere, both successful and struggling.
The production design, score and cinematography are absolutely beautiful. In fact virtually every technical aspect of this movie is perfect: the direction, writing, acting...you name it.
From the opening scene we're instantly swept up in the rush of artistic passion...only to be knocked on our asses back into reality. That's the genius of La La Land. It's the perfect balance of both worlds.
I also love that we start off seeing Mia and Sebastian's love for their art forms before we even begin to see their love for eachother develop. This movie is a tale of two romances, and showing that one (the passion for their art) is as vital as the other (the love story) is what elevates La La Land above every other love story out there.
These ideas are perfectly developed throughout the film, both harmonising and clashing at various stages, until that wonderfully bittersweet ending brings it all to a close.
La La Land is cinema at its finest, an emotional journey like no other.
