I don’t know if I’ve seen a Lynch movie with this much hopefulness. It’s a total blast filled with some of the wackiest performances from everyone involved, especially Dafoe. What I love just as much is the sense of a “film family” or community that Lynch builds with his work. I’ve heard so many say “this is a weird one” or “this is gonna be divisive” and my cynical ass has responded to all of that with “pfft I’M gonna love it. Can’t be THAT weird” but holy shit this is fucking wacko. I kinda love it? But still have issues. This feels like the White Noise of 2024, a weird, tonally incoherent (but that isn’t a total flaw), novel adaptation with some hit or miss performances.
