Ok, I want to give you a little heads up before I start the review, I know very little about the stage musical Wicked. I know it serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz from the Wicked Witch of the West’s point of view, I know that iconic poster, I know that it stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth(they make cameos during the scene when Elphaba and Glinda arrive in Oz), and I know like one or two songs from it. Outside of that, nada. So going into it, I had somewhat mixed hopes for it. Mixed hopes because of the controversies surrounding the movie and splitting the movie in two halves. Well I’m glad to say that me, my aunt Nicole and my mom were very thrilled by the end of it. The story was well told for a first half of the story exploring why Elphaba became wicked in the first place and her great relationship with Galinda, the acting was also pretty good. While I adore Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, it’s Arianna Grande who steals the show. She has the best laughs and spunk of the entire cast. The songs are pretty hummable. Seriously we are going to hum these songs all night long of it kills us. The choreography is unbelievable. The scene in the library with the spinning gears alone deserves attention because I don’t think I’ve seen choreography quite like that. I also admire the production design. Very steampunk. And for the majority of the runtime, I didn’t feel the length. The only time I was starting to feel it was the scene at the party when the disabled girl and the munchkin were getting together. But this was a fantastic musical and only part one of the musical in movie form. John Chu brings another musical to life with much pizzazz and energy. Bravo good sir.
