Don't worry I will like this a lot more come Christmastime. But in March? Sorry, no can do. Even the moments of introspection feel telegraphed, like the film is providing thematic handholding even in silence. Only Randolph in a couple scenes suggests an internal life, currents of being that even the writer and director may not be privy to. Yet she does not transcend the confines of a character type I would really like to see retired. Hattie McDaniel's been dead for 70 years, Hollywood. Please move on from your need for this kind of emotional/moral mammy role. OR have the nerve to, say, leave the annoying white guys behind and stay with Randolph and HER family. Wouldn't that have been nice.
