This is NOT the film you make after getting a bigger budget than your debut had if you want to keep working. It's better, stranger, and more memorable than that film. I need much processing and another watch to fully wrap my head around this one. But Jane Schoenbrun's voice feels absolutely vital in today's cinema. I can't remember the last time I have felt so outside the experience an artist wanted to convey, yet brought inside of it with such intense specificity. Schoenbrun's way with tone, image, sound and pace reaches genuinely uncanny levels. So much so that Justice Smith's deficiencies as an actor dissipate in my mind like a mist.
