Feels very much like the kind of thing you put in a time capsule to tell people what was going on in 2024. Maybe ironic, since it's mostly a period piece, but we live mostly in a period life; obsessed with objects that should have been ephemeral but instead have become the center of our culture. I keep thinking about the scene where the main character watches the Pink Opaque as an adult and sees a stupid cheap-o children's show. I thought of the disappointment of seeing the world around me obsessed with the same things I was obsessed with as a twelve year old. The true power of escapism isn't in the objects, it's in ourselves - and the true power of escapism is letting us imagining the possibility to escape. I must admit the movie moves much slower than I would've liked, and I found it a little bit barren in terms of how it chose to fill up its atmosphere - maybe it's the fact that the signifiers of this movie (all the 90s tv/adult swim/A24) are not quite my thing. But, the movie's a milestone - a major release movie about the horrors of not transitioning. I like that the mechanics of the movie's metaphor aren't neat and tidy. The interpretation of the metaphor, on the other hand, definitely is. The ending narrows down into a very fine and obvious definition of what the movie was all bout. Of course I felt unsettled by the existential dread of the ending, then I thought that there is something inherently hopeful about the trans experience in the fact that the answer to all the dread is right there. The answer, like this movie's metaphor, is quite obvious.
