Hard to admire its guts when it's got no brains and barely any muscle. A Cuarón or Bigelow might have made that grossly empty final siege exhilarating at least. Without the immersion of the theatre experience I was mostly bored.
I would point readers to journalist Omar El Akkad's first novel American War. Like Civil War, it transposes foreign conflict onto US territory, but actually does the rich world building to make the provocations really resonate. Asking you to essentially empathize with Mohamed Atta, or how a Mohamed Atta might be made, is I think gutsier than killing Ron Swanson.
