Godzilla vs. Mothra

Godzilla vs. Mothra

This was my first kaiju movie from the 90's era and I wasn't sure what to expect, because part of the appeal for these movies for me so far has been that beautiful cinematography which all Japanese films from the 60's seem to boast. Also, I guess I've always thought of that guys-in-rubber-monster-suits / miniature-cities-and-vehicles kind of approach is something which maybe didn't survive into the 90's. I don't know what I expected - not CGI obviously - but something more akin to what Hollywood films of the era might have attempted.

But no, not a problem - the monster action in this film is very similar in look and feel to what you get in the older movies, and that's a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not sure Mothra is my favourite kaiju. I do kind of like his larval stage but when he turns into a moth he's almost like a big colourful teddy bear. I know he's supposed to be a good guy here, but he's so cuddly, he's almost like a giant insectoid ewok!

Not really a complaint, though. This movie was a lot of fun. I think Godzilla looked really great and I was a huge fan of Mothra's evil twin, Battra. God, these movies are so much fun and just a constant joy to look at, I'm really quite glad I'm such a novice and have so many movies still to see. I am making a concerted effort to get over my slight OCD and am approaching these films in a random order - otherwise this might just be the cinematic obsession that finally pushes me over the edge into complete mental breakdown.

The semi-Indiana Jones adventure that this movie pretends to be for the first act or so is silly but makes a nice change from the usual human sideshow, and I really appreciate the film-makers going to the effort to mix things up.

What else can I say? Happiness and joy await you with this movie - which of course is true of every kaiju movie I have watched thus far.
