Gundam is about autism; Macross is about driving a fast car & singing pop songs with your girl. Gundam, like Gran Turismo, may have redefined a genre through its realism, sophistication & rewarding payoffs, but Macross is like Ridge Racer, or Outrun: the level of craft is comparable (if smaller in scope) but the pleasures here are immediate, plus the music is better

Lends itself, obviously, to trans readings; but I'd argue I Saw the TV Glow is less interesting as merely "trans". A film about stasis, paths not taken, missed connections, looking inside and finding old TV shows where a person should be, mutually destructive mental illness, turning to the past for answers and finding childishness and camp.
