A political lark that never bites off more than it can chew, and yet, it’s somewhat easy to imagine how it could have turned out if Hollywood got its hands on the material before an auteur beyond borders swooped in. Thankfully that wasn’t the case here, because we can almost be certain that it wouldn’t have been executed with this kind of scuzzy polish or grotesque charm that unfolds as organically as it does. Stan is phenomenal.

Such accurate depictions of how thoughts, emotions and conversations actually play out in real life, and Triet leaves more than enough subtext for the audience to read between the lines. It’s brilliant. The dialogue is sharp and impressively meticulous, and is reinforced by some knockout performances from the entire cast, including Snoop the dog. Totally deserving of its Palme d'Or and Palm Dog wins at Cannes.
