Minorevolution’s review published on Letterboxd:
Back so soon??
Yeah, I couldn’t resist. 😩
More little details! (I always think I’m gonna write a shorter review whenever I rewatch this but it NEVER happens LOL.):
(Also, Very Very Mild Across The Spider-Verse spoilers below - nothing much at all, and nothing plot related. You could possibly draw an inference from the second thing. maybe. But you’d have to be a REALLY good guesser to get the specifics LOL. Just go see Across The Spider-Verse in theaters now don’t wait anymore I promise it’s worth it!!!!)
Anyway, no further ado:
In the TV Miles’ dad drives past on the way to Miles’ new school, under the breaking news headline about Spider-Man and the collider earthquakes reads:
“Baby Born Today • Bitcoin Hits New High With Intro To Futures Market • Largest Baby [D….?]”
Hilarious 😂
Miles’ Dad ranting about Spider-Man:
“Yeah, I do like his cereal though, man, I’ll give him that.” 😆 I never noticed that before somehow! And it’s also a great callback to Peter Parker’s introduction, where he mentions his cereal and Christmas album and stuff.
Ad for a multilevel marking pyramid scheme on the back of the True Life Tales Of Spider-Man comic book Miles holds. Nice 😆 “Everybody and Everyone… Do You Know At Least 10 People?” Lol.
Miles doesn’t know what Comic Con is (it must not exist in Earth-1610), and he doesn’t know what it is when it’s mentioned in Across The Spider-Verse either! Great callback in ATSV. Watching Into The Spider-Verse is always a treat, but having one more piece of this universe’s puzzle is going to add a bunch of other things to notice on rewatch, in a movie where you always find/notice something new on rewatch anyway! Imagine how much richer the experience will be after seeing all three parts… :0 !
I just realized that in Across The Spider-Verse, Spider-Man 2099 stands on a rooftops in the rain with a bright red neon sign behind him- kind of like the red sky that surrounds the Prowler in a similar pose while he watches Miles run away (and during the entire previous chase scene where the sky and color pallet is red, which I noticed in my review from 2 rewatches ago.) Likely an intentional choice- not gonna go more into why, since I’m only doing extremely light and non-major Across The Spider-Verse spoilers in this review. If you’ve seen Across The Spider-Verse you’ll get it—and if you haven’t… don’t wait any longer like I waited it’s phenomenal!!
The split between the wall when Miles’ dad is talking to him through the door is fantastic, as it shows them being separated, as they have been physically for a good amount of time since Miles became a new Spider-Man, AND emotionally separated from each other, and distant, for much longer before the Spider-Verse opened. And… it’s like comic book panels! Incredible… I hope that word isn’t losing its meaning as I use it to describe the Spider-Verse films, but I mean it to its fullest effect every time!
I probably did notice this before, but the “HEY” in the background, when Miles does the Shoulder Touch to Kingpin, is just fantastic. The “BLAM!”s and “Bagel!”s and the like in this movie are so wonderfully comic-tastic.
So, yeah, to wrap up, I had more tears at the emotional beats (a bit less than last time, but this movie still always puts me in my feelings), and euphoria and goosebumps at Mile’s What’s Up Danger leap of faith, as usual as well!…
I think I’m gonna definitely say, now, that I do prefer Into The Spider-Verse a bit more than Across The Spider-Verse, just because it’s so self-contained.
BUT.
Across The Spider-Verse is even more insane visually, and much more mature and character-driven (see my ATSV review for many more details!).
Because of the even more mind-bending visuals of Across The Spider-Verse, while watching Into The Spider-Verse again, I wished that certain sections had a few more million dollars to play with to make them even more incredible. The action scenes are fantastic, but apart from the supercollider sequences, aren’t as massive in scope and visual insanity as ATSV, simply because ATSV had much more money (and probably time, too) to work with. But they’re still incredible, of course.
Also, after having watched ITSV so many times now, I found like, one or two minor areas where the visuals could be a bit better- once or twice where Miles’ detail was a bit basic, and once again where a few of the Alchemax employees at the collider looked kinda like Playstation 3 NPCs or something- but really, if it’s taken me five times to even find a single thing about this movie to nitpick, it doesn’t matter at ALL, haha!
Not one bit.
The post-credits scene and Gwen’s “got a minute?” Obviously hit harder after seeing Across The Spider-Verse. And the post-credits scene is even funnier given what I now know about 2099’s character 😆
Unsurprisingly, Into The Spider-Verse is as fantastic as ever. :)
And I’m eager to go see Across The Spider-Verse again soon!! I just can’t get enough Spider-Verse right now. It’s gonna be a long agonizing wait for Beyond The Spider-Verse, but also will be here before we know it! For now, I’m content riding the wave of Spidey joy. I might be off to watch other Spider-Man movies soon, too. We’ll see!
(I also want to get into the comics at some point! If you’re a comics person and have any recommendations on Spider-Man comics to check out, or just how to get into comics in general, please hit me up in the comments! I’d love to get into the medium Spider-Verse is the ultimate love letter to. :)) )
5 Stars, Baby. Oh yeah. 😘💋✨⭐️🌟✨🌟🤩🕸🕷🕸🕷🕸🕷🕸🕷🕸🕷🕸🕸🕷🕸🕷🕸🕷
