Most journalism movies treat the profession with a sense of valor, as though being a journalist is the most noble thing you could do. In some cases, I’m sure these films are right.
What has been missing from the journalistic film cannon (at least to my knowledge) is an interrogation of profession itself, which this film does in a nuanced way. The import of the job is acknowledged here, but the real life tragedy at the end of film, combined with the inevitable disappointment in the audience, stands for more than initially meets the eye.
