Being John Malkovich 1999

Perfect dream logic movie that has no right to exist or be this good. Pretty much everything that tried to imitate this vibe in the 2000s was too saccharine and twee but here you get real scumbag John Cusack, the master Cameron Diaz, an insanely sexy and cool Catherine Keener, and of course, Johnny himself in a role he by all accounts should never have taken on but works so beautifully in. Bursting with ideas and incredibly funny.

A vampire movie that strips the glamour and power of the mythos and renders its monsters into pathetic, wandering ghouls. Really feels like someone's tabletop game became a movie. You've got the main guy being a total badass who has a katana for some reason, unnecessary bar fights, weird lore, a kind of convoluted adventure — it's all here. Pretty solid entry in the "what if there was a cool dude we didn't explain too much" genre.

Things I love about this movie:
-No explanation or lore behind Christine. She's just an evil car! We can all understand that, we don't need backstory
-The affection between Arnie and Dennis, which feels pretty unusual for an 80s movie about high school guys
-Seemingly 40 year old high schooler who gets killed by the car
-The preponderance of "shitter" as a term of abuse, which I've literally never heard anywhere else
-Carpenter's killer theme
-"God, I hate rock and roll"
