The Shining 1980
100
4K UHD
Primarily a film about abuse, and how sanity is often impossible to return to once it's lost. Jack Nicholson gives a performance that goes from 'fully crazy' to 'existential specter of rage and terror' over the course of two hours and change. Undoubtedly a masterpiece.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Saw this one in the theater last night, great experience. Underrated how funny this movie is. For half the movie, Nicholson is in full bozo mode (TM LexG), having more fun as an actor than anyone is ever allowed to in a Kubrick film. This movie is about a guy who takes a job after they tell him "the last guy who did this killed his family" and then he tells himself "I'm not going to kill my family" over…

I maintain that the scene with the guy in the bear costume is just something random and nobody in the film had any idea what it was supposed to mean.

The Last Showgirl 2024
The most ‘that’s it?!’ ending ever, after an hour and a half all this really has to show for itself is good ideas and a genuinely magnetic performance from Pamela Anderson. Because of her you are instantly drawn to a character who is underserved by a pretty bad script that can only make its themes stick by explaining them to you in scenes where Billie Lourd is for some reason playing a 22 year old who has the shruggy and…

Mission: Impossible III 2006
Crummiest visuals of the franchise bar none (Mindel did great work with this slick, metallic, hyper cut style previously on Domino but Tony Scott you are not, Abrams) and patient zero for that late 2000s craze for blockbusters with relentless tv pilot plotting at the sacrifice of just about everything else. Luckily this still manages to get by on the sheer intensity and cleverness of its setpieces (that bridge bit still slaps), the strength of its supporting character actors, and of course Cruise Power, baby.
