Primarily a film about abuse, and how sanity is often impossible to return to once it's lost. Jack Nicholson gives a performance that goes from 'fully crazy' to 'existential specter of rage and terror' over the course of two hours and change. Undoubtedly a masterpiece.

I maintain that the scene with the guy in the bear costume is just something random and nobody in the film had any idea what it was supposed to mean.

Did I like this? No. But what a delight to see Owen Wilson where one least expects him!

gia coppola tries to make a sean baker movie despite having never met a real person. nevertheless bautista & pam anderson (!!) great. sleazy jason schwartzman cameo also fun.

Crummiest visuals of the franchise bar none (Mindel did great work with this slick, metallic, hyper cut style previously on Domino but Tony Scott you are not, Abrams) and patient zero for that late 2000s craze for blockbusters with relentless tv pilot plotting at the sacrifice of just about everything else. Luckily this still manages to get by on the sheer intensity and cleverness of its setpieces (that bridge bit still slaps), the strength of its supporting character actors, and of course Cruise Power, baby.

they needed to let philip seymour hoffman cook a whole lot more. he should be onscreen the whole time. picture in picture down in the corner
